Ed has the Breakbeat Progressive House Electronic Flow to form an Obsession

Ed Flow is a Spanish DJ who’s been in the game since mid-1998—a virtual lifetime in the scale of the fast-paced electronic scene. As such there’s an almost expected diversity to his sound: beats that recall circa-2000 french house, spacey loops that echo mid-90’s breakthrough trance, heavier, articulated sample that borrow from the garish maximalism that’s swamped digital soundscapes the past few years. He’s various elements from Daft Punk, Kaskade, and Moby distilled into a single musician. He’s released on a half-dozen labels, put out original compositions and remixes, and produced and mixed for other musicians. Ed Flow is, quite clearly, a seasoned musical veteran.

‘Obsession’ is his first release of 2012, and it’s a clear attempt to straddle Ed’s more old school sensibilities with more recent trends. It succeeds…somewhat. The entire track has the same feel as digitally re-colored black-and-white films: this is mid-90’s trance fleshed out with a few bells and whistles plucked from various trends over the intervening. In many ways it sounds fresh, but has this old school music sound. And, honestly, it’s none the worse for that. Where many of Ed’s younger contemporaries leap on the newest sound in hopes of snatching their fifteen, almost inevitably resulting in music that sounds groping and mimetic, Ed has crafted a sound that’s wholly his own. A collage, in fact, of so many various styles that it’s safe to say that Ed Flow and only Ed Flow could craft this exact sound: it’s a condensed reflection of his journey as an artist. So as a reservoir of a variety of musical styles, it’s a succesful piece of music. Viewed in a less critical light, it’s unfortunately a bit lackluster. For all the complexity that clearly went into producing this sound, the end result sounds depressingly like trance-music-101. You’ve heard it before, you’ll hear it again, and most of the time you’ll never remember the name or the beat or anything distinct about it. There’s just too much of it out there, too generically done.

For auteurs of trance and its surrounding genres, this is one worth digging into—the sedimentary layers of music read something like the walls of a worn-away canyon might to a geologist. Anybody else, though, and there probably isn’t much here for you. Some competent electronic dance music: no more, no less. Fun while it lasts, but almost a 0% chance of leaving a lasting impression.

Ed Flow has defined his own brand style of Progressive House and Breakbeat inspired by his clubbing days between London, Tenerife and Ibiza. Being a mixture of British and Spanish descent, it could be said that Ed Flow has been nurtured by the best of both worlds in the Electronic music scene. ‘Rain, is an exquisitely, beautiful production bringing sound effects, synthetics and hallowed voices to produce a soundscape unparalleled’, wrote Jesse Saunders (Broken Records).

Based in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Ed has been on the move between London, the sunny shores of the Canary Islands and Goa in India, for the last five years. His experiences in his travels have further inspired him in his quest for developing his own musical expression. Over the years, he has worked both in and out of the music industry, as well as in and out of the DJ booth. His love for Music has remained a constant over the years and eventually led him on the path of Music Production and Composition.

Ed Flow is currently releasing Music in his own small, digital imprint, called Soultrade Records. The label has been releasing quality monthly releases since its launch on October 2013. Initially, the label will be focusing on presenting varieties of Music within the House genre as well as Breakbeat. Soultrade Records will be committed to finding new talent, as well as collaborating with already established artist from around the world.
